The Problem

Building a sustainable future.

The U.S. wastes approximately a third of the food it creates. That food waste accounts for 6.1% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and in New Jersey alone it releases roughly 4 million tons of CO₂e every year. Composting offers a powerful solution, but government inefficiencies and high service costs have held back statewide action. We believe affordable composting is the key to making sustainable waste solutions accessible to everyone.

Our solution

What Torus is doing about it.

Torus takes on this problem directly. We give households a free bucket and compostable bags, then handle regular curbside pickups so food scraps never reach a landfill. Everything we collect goes to Trenton Renewables, where it becomes clean biogas instead of methane.

By keeping the service free and youth-led, we remove the two biggest barriers to composting: cost and hassle. Every bucket we collect is proof that real climate action can be simple, local, and open to everyone. Learn more about our story or see where we serve.
