Trench composting skips the bin entirely. You dig a trench or hole in the garden, add food scraps, and cover them with soil, where they break down and feed the surrounding plants.

How it works

Dig down about a foot, add several inches of food scraps, and backfill with soil. Over the following weeks to months, soil organisms decompose the material in place, improving structure and fertility.

Pros and cons

It is invisible, odor-free, and requires no turning, but you need open garden space and it is harder to harvest finished compost since it stays in the ground. It pairs well with rotating garden beds.
