Sheet composting, sometimes called lasagna gardening, means layering organic materials directly on top of a garden bed and letting them break down where they lie, rather than in a separate pile.
How it works
Alternate layers of browns (leaves, cardboard, straw) and greens (food scraps, grass clippings) over an area of soil. Over a season, the layers decompose into rich planting material and suppress weeds underneath.
Pros and cons
It is a great way to build fertile beds with little digging, but it works over a longer timeline and needs a fair amount of material. It is popular with no-dig and permaculture gardeners.
