Composting is not just for people with big backyards. If you live in an apartment, you have a few solid options for keeping food scraps out of the trash.
Vermicomposting (worm bins)
A worm bin is compact, odorless when maintained well, and can live under a sink or on a balcony. Red wigglers turn food scraps into rich castings. The EPA notes that indoor worm composting is a practical option for small spaces.
Countertop collection plus drop-off
Keep a small sealed pail on the counter or in the freezer to store scraps, then bring them to a local drop-off site. Freezing between trips keeps things odor-free.
Curbside pickup
The simplest small-space option is to let someone else do the processing. With Torus, you fill a bucket and set it out. We cover the advantages in our post on curbside compost pickup.
